{"id":82,"date":"2014-07-03T02:47:00","date_gmt":"2014-07-02T17:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/unkaizan.com\/en\/2014\/07\/03\/whats-this-in-pasar-malam\/"},"modified":"2014-07-03T02:47:00","modified_gmt":"2014-07-02T17:47:00","slug":"whats-this-in-pasar-malam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/unkaizan.com\/en\/2014\/07\/03\/whats-this-in-pasar-malam\/","title":{"rendered":"WHAT&#8217;S THIS??? &#8212; in Pasar Malam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Greetings from LANGKAWI!!<\/p>\n<p>We feel more and more of the rainy season as there are more days we feel cooler after the rain (sometimes with much humidity).<br \/>\nJust a small tip &#8211; it will be useful to bring some long sleeve to wear in such condition or under strong air con!<\/p>\n<p>1 month of Ramadan for Muslims had started on June 29.<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s right &#8211; people cannot eat nor drink anything from the dawn till the dusk.<\/p>\n<p>\u30fb\u30fb\u30fbalmost all malay people start eating upon the sun hides away &#8211; doesn&#8217;t matter if you are still working or a customer in a shop!<br \/>\nIt tends to be difficult to catch a taxi at this timing as well&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>With this tradition, there are more food stands opening at places where usually there are&#8217;t any, and shops get busier after getting dark.<br \/>\n(Especially sweets! There is a custom to start eating with some sweets after long period of no food\/drink).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pict\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/25\/blog_import_592fef1eb3700.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nSo I&#8217;d like to write about the shops of night market today.<\/p>\n<p>Night market (Pasar Malam in Malay language) is open somewhere in Langkawi everyday, location depends on the days of the week.<br \/>\nIt cosists with food\/drink\/fruits\/clothes\/daily items stands.<\/p>\n<p>The one in Kuah opens on Wednesday and Saturday nights from approx. 6pm, and this seems to be the bigger ones.<br \/>\n(The photo below is the market from Kuah.)<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pict\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/25\/blog_import_592fef1f4cb26.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nHere you can walk around and munch on some local food.<\/p>\n<p>First picture is this:<\/p>\n<p>This fruit is know for being prohibited at some hotels and restaurants.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pict\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/25\/blog_import_592fef2049fe7.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pict\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/25\/blog_import_592fef212a666.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Durians!! King of fruits!<br \/>\nYes, you smell them even in such outside venue, because of this quantity!?<br \/>\nThis gentleman sounds mad when selling durians in Malay language, but when I asked him for a photo he smiled big to a camera.<\/p>\n<p>There are more than food stands &#8211; you&#8217;ll see some clothing ones too. They sell mostly womens or kids.<br \/>\nVery colorful!<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pict\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/25\/blog_import_592fef2214cd3.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here is the one with meal\/snack stand.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pict\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/25\/blog_import_592fef22ed51d.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\nNasi Lemak, Plut Ayam, Ketupat, spring rolls etc&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Ayam is chicken<br \/>\nNasi is rice<br \/>\nGoreng means fried<br \/>\nNasi Lemak is a popular breakfast dish in Malay cuisine.<br \/>\nRice cooked with coconut milk served with spicy fish sauce and boiled eggs.<br \/>\nToppings vary by restaurants or homes. Sometimes it comes with Ayam Goreng (fried chicken) or peanuts on top too.<\/p>\n<p>Plut is sticky rice,<br \/>\nKetupat is a sweet which sticky rice is cooked with coconut milk, then steamed.<\/p>\n<p>There are many to choose from, and very cheap! I always end up buying way more than I can put in my stomach.<\/p>\n<p>And now, I present you with Quiz Pasar Malam!!<\/p>\n<p>Question 1<br \/>\nWhat is this?<\/p>\n<p>There are numbers of flavors to choose from. Boiling water is a must.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pict\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/25\/blog_import_592fef23c0add.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The answer is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Yan Tao Fu!!!<\/p>\n<p>Most of the skewers are fish cakes, and some are with boiled eggs, with sausages, etc.<br \/>\nThey are cooked in boiling water or broth for a few minutes, then you can take out with a choice of sauce all in a plastic bag.<br \/>\nUsually there are hot sauce, sweet sauce, and black pepper sauce.<br \/>\nOne of my favorite night market foods.<\/p>\n<p>Question 2<br \/>\nWhat is this?<\/p>\n<p>It is obvious that it&#8217;s a sort of dessert&#8230;but are you familiar with the middle cake?<br \/>\nThe left one is a normal version.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"pict\" src=\"\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/25\/blog_import_592fef2477b0c.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Answer is&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Pudding!<br \/>\nThe appearance almost looks same with what I&#8217;d seen in Japan, but the taste requires some kick, some more vanilla sweetness to it.<br \/>\nI would ask for a little more improvement.<\/p>\n<p>The middle cake &#8211; top is pudding layer and the bottom half is cocoa sponge cake.
